Five "Bright Sides" to a five-hour flight delay

My flight from O'Hare to Detroit was delayed five hours last week when the plane we were supposed to take got stuck on the ground in Philadelphia because of severe thunderstorms. So rather than weep openly after each delay announcement, I tried focusing on the bright side of my situation. Here's what I came up with, in descending order of brightness.

  1. I now know the location of every book store, restaurant, and bar in the B and C terminals.
  2. I learned that Sudoku is best played at home in a cozy arm chair with a cup of coffee nearby. Not so much while sitting behind six pre-teen cheerleaders from Iowa practicing their clapping routines.
  3. For the first time in my life, I got my shoes shined from a professional shoe shiner. I highly recommend it.
  4. I learned that a McFlurry and a Starbuck's Caramel Macchiato are best when kept seperated by more than 15 minutes.
  5. At least I wasn't among the sorry souls sitting in a plane on the tarmac in Philadelphia for four hours.
